How It Works
In a sponsorship, you agree (in advance) to cover 100% of the entry fees for a particular tournament that will be played by a “pro player” who has been vetted by Skillz and is in good standing:
If the pro player wins their match, you will receive 90% of their prize:
If the pro player loses their match, neither you nor the pro player receive any prize:
If the match is refunded (for example, because no opponent for the pro player is found) then both you and the pro player will be refunded:
Skillz will send you information about the match, including a link to its replay, as well as a satisfaction survey. Prizes, if any, will be added directly to your account balance as matches are processed.
Fairness
Sponsorship is a form of “Staking”, which is not gambling when the underlying act (a skill-based gaming competition) is legal.
FAQ
Is it possible to enter multiple times?
- No, in order for as many users as possible to participate, entries are limited to one per user. Users who wish to enter multiple times may be considered in the case that not enough sponsorships are sold.
Is sponsorship considered gambling?
- Sponsorship is a form of “staking”, which is not gambling when the underlying act (a skill-based gaming competition) is legal. See also The Legality of Skill-Based Gaming.
Can I opt-out after I write in to player support?
- Requests to withdraw from the sponsorship program must be received prior to, when the opportunity to purchase a sponsorship ends, and Skillz begins withdrawing funds from account balances to process the purchase. Requests received after this time are not guaranteed to be honored.
When will I get my money?
- Sponsorships will be processed in the order that they were received, as the games for the sponsorship are completed.
What happens if the pro player doesn’t play a match at all?
- You will be refunded for your sponsorship.
What happens if the game is a tie?
- The pro player will be able to play tie-breakers to arrive at a winner and prize money distribution. If the tie-breakers do not result in a winner before the end of this special event, the match will be cancelled and entry fees refunded to you, to the pro player, and to their opponent.
